GOAL
Provide broad continuing education in the management of critically ill and injured patients.
Utilizing the latest guidelines and approach for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of critically ill trauma patients. The goal of this course is to improve knowledge, attitudes and skills of trauma and critical care providers.
EDUCATIONAL METHODS
Didactic lecture, panel discussions, audiovisual aids, and live sim performance.
OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the latest science behind evolving clinical approaches for optimal evaluation and care of injured and critically ill surgical patients
2. Discuss principles and importance of non-technical skill acquisition for trauma teams
3. Review current and future states of quality improvement in trauma care
4. Discuss evolving concepts in surgical critical care, including physiologic monitoring, massive transfusion strategies, resuscitation adjuncts, open abdomen management, ECMO use in trauma, and chest wall injury management
5. Describe advances related to evaluation and management of injured pediatric and geriatric patients as well as special considerations in trauma care at extremes of age.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The course is designed primarily for surgeons and mid-level trauma providers, nursing staff working in Level I-IV trauma centers. In addition, community general surgeons, emergency physicians, nursing staff, surgical residents and pre-hospital personnel involved in the care of injured persons.
The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center designates the above live activities for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™each. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CME is acceptable for meeting RN continuing education (CE) requirements, as long as the course is Category 1, and has been taken within the appropriate time frames.
